Diplo & Douster - ON

Our boy Douster just dropped this track with Diplo today and in his words is "the summer banger". I must say there are definitely some other Douster tracks I am looking for most notably the remixes he has been working on with Mad Rad. I can't help but toot our own horns, okay? Tactic / Supremo EP

Photobucket

My main dudes in Portland, Ben Tactic & Lincoln are some solid dudes. They grind. Tuff. Ambassadors of pushing the most future thinking Bass music parties in PDX. Got a chance to play with them again last month at Holocene and as always, had the time of my life flexin' wit em. The dude Ben just kills it on the moombahton tip. Not big hands in the air rave anthems, but sexy vibes to make girls sweat their week long troubles away type stuff. Peep the press release below and lets get to dancin'

Portland Oregon via Kansas City dj & producer Ben Tactic brings some thick tropical vibes with his new Supremo EP on Think 2wice Records. Both tracks are firmly rooted in moombahton, the much talked about new dance music genre that fuses elements of reggaeton, cumbia, dancehall and Dutch house. The title track, Supremo, fuses the traditional dem bow drum patterns found in moombahton with a classic b-boy sax sample and percolating synths. The second track on the release, Coroa de Ouro (Crown of Gold), is built around a sample of children singing in Portuguese.

Ben Tactic is best known as 1/2 of the dj & production duo Tactic along with Brent Tactic. Their remixes and original productions have been released on labels such as Mad Decent, Dress 2 $weat (Numbers), Palms Out Sounds, Slit Jockey and their own label Think 2wice. Ben also helps run the ground breaking club night Bubblin in Portland that has featured the regional debut of artists such as Roska, Dave Nada, Ramadanman, Kyle Hall, Nguzunguzu, Distal and Dre Skull.

MANDILLA's - A Face In Time

Pun(c)ution gallery presents, new work by Ms. Mandilla !

 (graphite on wood panel, 36" x 48")

"Embracing age in a world of botox and tummy tucks.  I choose to dive deep into the wearing age as a chronicle of a lifetime.  And question: when we re-make ourselves, are we revealing our true character, or are we stripping away our very identity?"

"While working on this series my curiosity grows every time I see someone wonderfully wrinkled with stories and those wrinkled with wisdom. I have a strong urge to hear the mystery's explained, I want to hear the conversations between those stiff wrinkles. In these portrait's I get to indulge in making up my own stories of each while confronting all the fears of aging."

Come out. Drink some drink. and Enjoy.

GVCCI HVCCI

I haven't posted in a while, so I think its about time. I've been loving this girl called Gvcci Hvcci [pronounced Gucci Hoochie]. I found out about her through an artist named Ritualz who featured her in his latest EP titled Ghetto Ass Witch. The lyrics to the song and the sound of her vocals made me want to find out more about her. She's still quite a mystery but she's entertaining w/ dirty and sometimes almost evils lyrics which I find pretty creative. I wrote her and asked if she had a release coming out and she says she'll have a mixtape out sometime this year but for now, here's a 2min crazy video by her called Crack The Whip (Cut The Rope).

Sharlese vs. Darwin in a R&B Battle

Sharlese and I are VERY opinionated about our music, which often leads to heavy discussions and even a bit ball breaking. The most recent disagreement came this morning in the shape of two nu R&B acts. In Sharlese's corner is Frank Ocean of LA's newest lil' stars, Odd Future. In my corner is Toronto-based R&B singer named Abel Tesfaye, or better known as The Weeknd. Download both records below and voice your opinion so we can put this argument to rest! GO!

Dembowsky - Dembow

Photobucket

Dembowsky is undoubtedly the new term in Paris, used to describe the feast of all that is tropical and Latin. This has all been made possible by Ecuadorian duo Jorge Flores & Santiago Rosero who now call Paris home. Upon arriving in the French capital three years ago, the team wanted to bring more of a Latin sound to a normally stuck in there ways French Electro scene (blah). The result of this is the new Dembow EP that just dropped today on Coco Bass Rec. The whole job is free, as in all of the releases on Coco Bass. Get involved. Get Dembow on it.

P Smoov Remix - Johnny's

So I remixed Brent Amaker and the Rodeo's "Johnny's Theme".
I made this remix at 4 in the morning by sampling the vinyl which Mr. Amaker so generously gave me. The next morning (oops I mean same morning) when I woke up and listened to it, I dug it. I sent it off to Brent. He dug it too. So did his publicist. So did his record label. Now you should.

Now get it.

Cedaa / No Northwest EP

Photobucket

The homeboy Ill Cosby's Seattle based label, Car Crash Set has been going from strength to strength within the past year. To mark the labels 50th release, CCS are dropping four different EPs in tandem by four different artists hailing from the Pacific Northwest. First up to bat is the Bellingham badman Cedaa. The EP contains his signature sounds of spaced out juke drums & lush pads that transports you to a misty wooded, off beatin' trail somewhere in the hills of Bellingham. Check out 'Palomino' to see what im getting at. I smoked some DMT to this song a couple weeks ago and have not been the same since. Misty mountain Shaman vibez. Get involved.

NGUZUNGUZU / The Perfect Lullaby

I played with the dudez Daniel & Asma or better known as Nguzunguzu back in October of last year. Ever since than, they have been a massive influence on what I call Bass Music these days. Filled with r&b sounds of the 90's & spaced out future who knows what genre it falls under music. Get involved. Make out with a chick music / take a walk through the park during a sunny Sunday type mix.

Birthday Posters

Sometimes you can't make a client happy, even if that client is your brother. My brother asked me to make a poster for his son's 2 year birthday party. After last year's poster, I definitely will do this every year.

This year he said this: "Don't feel obligated to use a picture of Bennett, but rather make it like one of the posters you normally make." I then went through some old mags and papers and decided to flip a 60's porn movie poster into a 2 year old's birthday poster. I don't know why, but I thought it was a brilliant idea. They ultimately loved it, but felt it was a little to raunchy to put up at the party. So instead, I made a two headed duck poster which I must say fits swimmingly for their party.

Too much?

Two ducks.

Raphael Saadiq - Good Man

Originally posted by Stephan Gray: "This is one of the filthiest music videos I've ever seen. Fucking Gorgeous."

Mayer Hawthorne - Impressions

Mayer aka Haircut just dropped a free download of covers the other day on Stones Throw and I must say it's a good continuation off of his album. This boy got some soul, and my lady likes him so I sometimes do feel blogged to share with you what she loves. FREE DOWNLOAD HERE

What he had to say about these covers:

"1. Work To Do
This one features my live band, The County: Quentin Joseph on drums, Topher Mohr on guitar, Quincy McCrary on piano, and Joe Abrams on bass. It was recorded live in a radio station studio somewhere during our Winter 2010 US tour. The tapes recently surfaced, but nobody can remember exactly where we were. The song is originally by The Isley Brothers, and that’s the only version I was familiar with until we started playing it in our live shows and people would come up to us and say “hey, loved your cover of Average White Band!”.

2. Don’t Turn The Lights On
My favorite track from Chromeo’s latest LP. On the surface it’s an electro-funk, dance floor filler, but underneath is a brilliant love ballad with lyrics that reminded me of something from Tyrone Davis. Dave1 (of Chromeo) told me the song is about a guy who falls in love with a ghost, so I wanted my version to have an eerie, ghostly feel to it. Quincy McCrary played the creepy piano solo at the end.

3. You’ve Got The Makings Of A Lover
Textbook Northern Soul from a little known Dallas, Texas group called The Festivals. I was digging for records in NY with my homey DJ Kurse, and the shopkeeper played the 45 in the store. Both of us immediately ran up to the counter and said “yo! what is THAT?!”. The original version was recorded in the late 60s, and the mix isn’t very good. I wanted a version that I could bump. Quentin Joseph played the drums and we recorded them at Sam Beaubien’s studio in Detroit. That’s Sam playing the trumpet as well.

4. Fantasy Girl
This song was written and composed by an amazing man from Pasadena named Steve Salazar. He was born with a heart condition and passed away at the young age of 27. Before he died he recorded one incredible album of demos in the mid-70s with a band called Shorty’s Portion. Peanut Butter Wolf found a copy of the album and I loved it so much that he gave it to me (thanks Wolf!). The vinyl had a handwritten note tucked in the sleeve that was addressed to anyone who could help the band with management, a record deal, radio airplay, etc. I’d estimate there were less than 300 copies pressed. That’s my Dad playing pedal steel guitar and Topher Mohr shredding the guitar solo on my version.

5. Little Person
Jon Brion is not from this planet. He penned this song for the soundtrack to Charlie Kaufman’s film “Synecdoche, NY”. I didn’t get the film at all, but I really got the soundtrack. The original has only female vocal and piano, but I always heard a larger arrangement. Hubert Alexander played some of the piano and I did everything else.

6. Mr. Blue Sky
This one also features my band, The County, and was recorded live, in one take, in a tiny makeshift tent, at a festival in Dour, Belgium. "

No Theft

Sometimes you gain inspiration from people that you don't even know. And sometimes you build a rapport with those people based on like minded thinking, creative projects, and a mutual respect. Please check out NO THEFT and his great poster work. I've been checking his work out since P first put me onto Le Grand Cru, a group of designers, artists, and musicians from where P grew up, that are now working in Seattle as well. They've shown OFS love and we always show it back.

This video below, is what prompted me to blog about No Theft today. I am very jealous of this idea and think it's brilliant. Using a beet for his art on the Japan compilation that Le Grand Cru is putting out made me go back to the drawing board for this current poster I'm working on. Pick up the compilation HERE.

Shabazz Palaces - City Arts

One thing I love about being on tour is the amount of time I have to myself to listen to music. During the three weeks we had with Mash Hall, I can tell you that we all were playing our favorites, our own music, and stuff that isn't even out yet.

The new Shabazz record definitely struck a chord with everyone in the van. I don't know the name of the song, but while driving, Darwin played one song like 8 times in a row. It's great to see the love these two have received and it's much deserved. Black Up, the band’s debut on Sub Pop, comes out June 28. Check this great cover story about Shabazz in this month's addition of City Arts HERE.

Here is "Lost Foundling" a song they dropped about a month ago for your listening pleasures.
