Lemonade x Le1f x Darwin Play Barboza Tonight

Super hyped to be playing along side both of these acts tonight at Barboza. Doors are at 8pm, dont miss out on this one.

lemonadepodcast

Lemonade is a band. It's not often that bands get invited to take part in the XLR8R podcast series, but the Brooklyn trio is not the average indie outfit, even if its new full-length, Diver, is loaded with the kind of wonderfully emotive, synth-driven pop that rarely appears on our website. In fairness, the record also includes nods to early-'90s R&B, grime, new age, 2-step, Balearic house, '80s freestyle, and other styles too numerous to list. Basically, many of Lemonade's tastes line up pretty closely with our own. Furthermore, XLR8R has been following—and, more importantly, liking—the exploits of this group since its early days as a DIY psychedelic/tropical rave outfit, even before the release of its self-titled debut in 2008. All these years later, the release of Diver marks a major milestone for Lemonade, not to mention an important stylistic turning point for the band. To commemorate the occasion, we invited its members to put together this exclusive mix. In truth, Lemonade has put together a collection of tunes that essentially represents the band's collective headspace. While plenty of people will undoubtedly attempt to ascertain what Diver is "about," plenty of the answers are right here, as Lemonade cruises through new-age bliss, '90s house nostalgia, sun-soaked tropical grooves, inventive bass explorations, and more. The tracklist may appear fractured, but it's a remarkably cohesive listen. Whether behind the decks or in the recording studio, it appears that Lemonade has learned to bring together disparate influences and form a focused musical statement.

NEWLE1F

Khalif Diouf, aka Le1f, made this dark, immersive and painstakingly detailed mixtape using cash raised through the crowdfunding website Kickstarter. He asked for $2000 to put it together, but got considerably more than that in the end. Whichever way you look at it, it’s a bargain – especially now that it’s available to us for the unbelievably low price of zero cents.

Following collaborations with Das Racist and Nguzunguzu, Le1f’s ‘Dark York’ is an immensely rich tape of gothic terror, stuttering beats and sludgy vocals dripping with the grime of New York City. Underlying it all is Le1f himself, part of a wave of openly gay rappers coming out of Gotham right now to slyly overturn hip hop’s outmoded homophobic streak.

Frikstailers @ Nectar Sept 29th

Photobucket

It’s 2020 and you’re on a jeep in the rainforest, in search of a notorious underground dance party. You’re pursued by the jungle police, who are cracking down on unreported tropical clubs with jetsetter deejays and the most savage gogo dancers. But you give them the slip, through an especially dense patch of banana trees and rabid shrubbery. You find the club, enter through the trunk of a hollow tree and bless the ecosphere with your hotness on the earthy dance floor. Cumbiancha Muyo blasts from the speakers – your favorite deejays are on the bill, responsible for a night of green mayhem and abandonment. Kings of the futuristic tropical landscape, the Frikstailers. All going down at Nectar Lounge on Sept 29th. With support from El G (ZZK) Darwin & The Crooked Clef.

Fader - "all outre cumbia circuit-bent through neon dance tunes that interpret the most electric side of South America."

Global Noize Blog - "it sounds like Four Tet stepped into a jungle cantina with a wicked percussionist and found a casio laced with peyote.
